From a user's perspective the DSM (Synology DiskStation Manager) is thoroughly good:

unplug old disk, insert new disk, click two buttons, drink a cup of tea.

@fribbledom If you enjoy pulling a drive from a live array, you should checkout the Synology clustering some time.

It's a whole new level to yank a servers power cables out of the mains and watch the other machine pickup the load, open file handles and everything.

@fribbledom I'll always prefer a homebrew NAS in my heart but honestly? Synology is really good. I've been very happy with my 4-bay one. Plus you can do a lot of stuff over SSH if you so choose (though you might lose their fancy RAID option)

@fribbledom I love my synology!

@fribbledom then cry because disk access is unbelievably slow for no good reason

@fribbledom
I never dared to do that. Always nicely deactivated it first etc.

Managed three NASes at my last job, and when upgrading we used some dual-slot USB hard drive docks to clone the contents over to the new drives. *much* faster than replacing/rebalancing each one separately.
Means you have to take it offline for a day, but in our case, that was better than reduced redundancy for a week or two.

@fribbledom Synology IS good, though the consumer grade one that my prior job bought is terrible for running VMs off of. I asked them to get a commercial grade unit, but instead they grabbed two consumer ones...
