Can anyone eat Asparagus raw? My symptoms are more like poisoning than allergy - stomach pains, overall weakness, numbness of the throat. No swelling or skin rashes. No problem if the vegetable is heat-treated (boiled).

@stuff Oxalic acid? Not sure that's in asparagus, but it's in many raw veggies that are typically eaten cooked, and it can cause numbness or burning in the throat.

@amaranthus I'm not sure what the mechanism is, I'm just asking because online sources seem to indicate that humans should be able to eat asparagus raw.

@stuff I've eaten it before raw as a kid, it used to grow all over the irrigation ditch in my home town, but it was kind of unpleasant for anything but the smallest stalks.
