Remember Death Rally, one of the many Apogee shareware hits?

4-player network support over IPX/SPX made it a dark horse for LAN parties.

@fribbledom What does a 'dark horse' mean in this context?

@trinsec

When I think of a LAN party in the 90s, I think of DOOM, Duke Nukem and the likes. But in reality, this was one of the most played games back then (for the LAN parties I went to anyway).

@fribbledom So, a dark horse is something you don't think immediately of in a given context, but is actually the most used thing? Kinda without realizing it at that time?

@trinsec

Yeah, or per definition:

"a candidate or competitor about whom little is known but who unexpectedly wins or succeeds."

@fribbledom Learned something new, thanks!

@fribbledom I remember Kali/Khan games on Descent over IPX, gaming with kids all over the world, back in 99.

@fribbledom Yes, I played that one quite a bit. Not much on multiplayer though. Apogee had quite a lot of those under appreciated games. I really liked Raptor as well.
