I just followed @Pwnallthethings lead and desaturated my profile picture on that other social media site. Just a small, subtle reminder to myself and others that that place is no longer home, but rather a pale version of its prior self.

(Not that B&W photography means that generally; on the contrary. But it seems appropriate here,)

@Pwnallthethings this seems to be turning into a Thing.

@knobee @mattblaze @Pwnallthethings Mastodon seems like a *perfect* tool for creating echo chambers.

@developing_agent @knobee @mattblaze Sometimes I think that's for the best, getting everyone together to share ideas was an interesting idea, but it seemed to have lead mostly to conflict and animosity rather than understanding. Having a more careful linking of the more moderate elements rather than allowing the extremes to run rampant on each other may help in that front.

@developing_agent @knobee @mattblaze Have the extremes link to a little less extreme, and then they to the more moderate, and hopefully you can pull people more centerward, if you have the extremes smashing into each other, they'll take the most extreme stuff on the other side as proof to reinforce their extreme views.

@kazriko @mattblaze @knobee That kind of mixing doesn't happen naturally. They pull away from each other into their own communities and restrict their interactions. Double if they have the ability to defederate each other's servers. It's the way the internet's worked forever, with groups carving out their own forums and channels where outsiders aren't welcome.

@kazriko @mattblaze @knobee Look no further than truth social for an example. It's akin to a self-defederated right-wing twitter or mastodon. They don't seek to bring the wider internet to their door, nor does anyone else invite them.

@kazriko @mattblaze @knobee People clash on twitter, it's true, but they also clash on the streets too, so what is the difference? A shared virtual space reflects a shared meatspace.
