For someone who has been here since 2017 it's funny to read comments of newcomers such as: "Is this #Mastodon thing going to stick or be dead in a few months like #Clubhouse?"
I can assure you that Mastodon will be alive and kicking precisely because it's not a VC-funded startup.
@sesivany from another point of view, I joined #Mastodon solely for the purpose to make friends with free software community worldwide.
Previously, I tried Hubzilla, the result was very silent.
I also tried Diaspora before that, and the result was even more silent, almost no one there.
I also tried Friendica or GNU Social very long time ago. Nobody to find there, personally.
When I joined Mastodon, I found my community, my friends & many new people.
From this PoV, Mastodon is a success.
