Ok, just spent big bucks on a new car stereo and backup camera.

This’ll be kinda cool. Looking forward to hooking it up.

@beej Just so I am clear, back up as in reversing, or back up as in spare?

@barrowofdirt Reversing camera.

@beej I need a second reversing camera. Then it can be a backup backup camera.

@beej Ooh, is the new head unit one of those ones that has the screen that pops out and stand up when you want to use it?

@blackcoat It’s actually big enough that the screen is just there all the time.

My 2013 Jetta already has such a beast. This is an OEM upgrade.

@beej installing one in my old car was the best decision I ever made for using that machine. Fishing the camera wire through the edge trim was a pain but you can get it back to looking good with enough fucking around.

Then again they have these wireless thingies these days, so I hope your install goes smoothly

@sgormf Oh, I’ll be fishing a camera wire. Everything I’ve ordered is OEM for VW in China.

@beej "This week on Tinker Tailor..." I would watch the hell out of that, honestly.

@WoF I have not yet figured out how to drive the car up the stairs in our building.

Though if we could make it work remotely somehow, I’d do it.

@beej I believe all you would need is a steep enough ramp and some nitro.

Although maybe a prerecord like the car diagnosing/fixing in Road Quest?

@WoF I’m really tempted to do a pre-record. Managing a camera can get in the way of actually doing work, though.

One install video I found was a guy going through the bulk of what he did previously (running the wire) and then he pulled off the trunk trim in real-time, installed the camera, and connected the cables. Actually very helpful and skips all the messing around.

There’s no video online of a glove box USB install (which is what I’m doing), so I’m going to try and capture that to video at the very least.

@beej I'm now massively curious as to what model of stereo and backup cam you're installing now. I'm guessing that it's a glovebox install because most, if not all, of the power wires are behind it (depends on the model of your car), but then is the USB for Android Auto/Apple Carplay for the stereo, or is it for recording for the backup camera?

Is this actually a two-in-one thing where it's a car stereo and backup camera all in one?

@WoF It’s an RCD330, an OEM radio for VW China.

The radio sits in the center console, and you can install the USB extension wire either to the lower pocket, or to the glove box (or really anywhere else you want to go). I already have the VW MDI port in my glove box, so I figured I’d put the USB port there too. Then I can plug in the wireless CarPlay dongle there instead of having it out in my car.
