Oops, looks like the power supply or whatever component is dying on the docker server finally went most of the way out, it doesn't even stay running long enough to boot. I suppose tonight or tomorrow I should unbolt it from the rack and troubleshoot that. I hope I have a spare power supply that my son hasn't gutted for its fans.

@stuff @deprecated_ii We're in a cul-de-sac that is off of another cul-de-sac at a 90 degree angle, we can't even see when someone bypasses the combined cluster. I have no idea why they built that way. They even have a road that extends out an exit from directly through another cul-de-sac shaped road. Probably poor planning on the initial layout then people started extending it.

Huh. My docker server has been really flaky the last couple of weeks. I wonder if the lower temperatures in the garage are causing it problems. It was fine all summer, but now it's had 3 power supply cutouts in 2 weeks. I have to go out there and pull the power for 10 seconds before the power switch will respond again.

@stuff @deprecated_ii I was out with the kid in a busier area, but my wife said we got a few people despite being back at the end of a dead end street.

FreeBSD is way behind their donation goals for the year. I went ahead and tossed them $10 because I use their system for my file server...

@Sirsquid Same for all of fediverse, pick a software package, pick a provider, etc.

Dear self-hosters,

we are relaying this information:

OpenSSL will release a patch for a *critical* vulnerability on November 1st

We advise to keep a close look on this and promptly upgrade their server once the patch will be available in Debian

You know the isn’t just , right? :)

Do you live stream? Check out https://owncast.online

It’s a lightweight free and open live-steaming server. (We use it at Small Technology Foundation for our streams at https://owncast.small-web.org)

And you can follow people’s Owncast servers from the fediverse and get notified when they’re about to start streaming, etc. (e.g., hit the follow button on our stream and enter your Mastodon/fediverse account) awesome

@requiem @vertigo I do, it's a raspberry pi zero though.

My timeline has been pretty active today. I imagine it's because of the event at Birbsite. If anything can pry people off birbsite, it's this I suppose. Hopefully we don't get everyone bleeting their way as a herd onto mastodon and mastodon social though when there's so many other good fediverse software and servers.

@beej There are even specific instances named after the practice on fediverse, if you search for them.

@civodul @Bubu I believe that Rust in the kernel is 100% optional at the moment. You can easily build the kernel without it. The things being built in it are mostly optional drivers at the moment.

@union Yes. And it's possible that they've already been doing that to the Saudis to a limited extent. I recall some drone attacks in that area several years back. It was attributed to Houthi rebels in Yemen, but they were probably using Iranian drones for it.

@union @jeremiah Of course, "Network" is a relative term here. The only parts that would be involved for serving Ukraine are the satellites that are overhead at the moment, and the base stations in Poland. It's definitely overloading those base stations, but it shouldn't impact Starlink in any country other than those immediately around Eastern Poland and Western Ukraine.

But yeah, SpaceX shouldn't be required to give this away for free indefinitely.

@anime I'm more interested now in One Peace books. They've brought over 2 series I really like (Soudouki and Galactic Officer,) and 1 that I somewhat like (Farming life in another world,) out of all the ones I've heard about. I should look at their catalog and see if there's any others to buy.

@anime Though I can see that the original web novel has stopped updating, and the Manga is already 75%+ through the original story.

abeshinzo

@anime Yeah, I kind of got a glimpse of that with the end of chapter notes. Hopefully it brings in enough money with getting official english translations that it gives them a reason to keep at it, but probably not.

I've picked my next manga series to buy in dead tree form. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/164273201X It's basically Isekai Dahak, if you know what the Dahak series is. (Futuristic technology ends up on a more primitive planet, builds up its tech base until it can challenge the big bad aliens that are sweeping the galaxy to exterminate all life other than themselves.)

@union Yeah, they'll have to eventually move further away if they want to be free of Russia. If they stay in the borderlands it's only a temporary escape.
